Girls Kayak Initiative in Nepal
FALL 2009, NEPAL GILS KAYAK INITATIVE: ‘Himalayan River Girls’
Between November 12th to December 20th, 2008 Inka Trollsas and a crew of international kayak volunteers underwent the first EVER women’s river guide-training project in Nepal. With great results, the program is now intending to continue on with another this upcoming fall of 2009…
From the moment I heard about this initiative I’ve believed that this project holds the potential to offer local women a means of achieving not only personal empowerment but also much enjoyment and satisfaction through working on the rivers as guides and safety kayakers! As seen above, some of the major hurdles for women (on top of the fact that not a lot of locals kayak themselves) are things such as strong cultural constraints (ie. young age of marriage), financial restrains, time constraints and simply a lack of instructors and/or gear... Having personally been a professional instructor for over 7 years I am honored to say that I’m set to become a part of the team for this upcoming 2009 training season in which I hope to share my skills for a great cause, all the while exploring a beautiful country and its people!
Now I realize that this option is hard for many to undergo and many of these other constraints might be out of our control, but together we have the power to greatly reduce of these two fundamental barriers- instruction and gear! - Think back to when you started boating and how much it helped having friend’s 'hand me downs' - Things such as boats, paddles, helmets, rash tops, booties, nose plugs, etc... Even if its just something little let me know let me know cause a lot of ‘littles’ can add up to ‘a lot’!! Gear doesn’t need to be much, expensive, or new… Just as long as it works would be greatly appreciated!
If I can get enough donated I intend on getting a cargo shipment put together for the end of September 2009, so if you or anyone you know might have something they could donate please let me know!
AND in return for all your favors I promise to take photos of the gear in use and set up a link of a short film that may hopefully encapsulate a bit of my journey there, from the rivers to the culture.,,

Lets help these ladies, and hey, maybe one day they can show us down some wicked rivers!!
